The same idea, a different heat source

A halogen oven is a glass bowl with a lid that holds a halogen bulb and a fan; the bulb glows hot, the fan drives that heat around the food, and the food crisps. An air fryer oven is a metal cavity with a heating element and a fan doing the identical thing. So the mechanism is shared — both are convection, both crisp by moving hot air — and the real comparison is about what the halogen bulb and the glass bowl change versus a metal element in an insulated box. What the halogen bowl gets right

Two things. The halogen bulb reaches full heat almost instantly, so there is effectively no preheat, and the glass bowl lets you watch the food the entire time, which is genuinely useful for judging doneness. Halogen ovens are also cheap and light. For a small household that wants to crisp a single batch and see it happen, the format has real appeal, and it is not a gimmick.

Where the air fryer oven pulls ahead

Insulation, capacity and versatility. A glass bowl radiates heat out into the room and holds temperature poorly, so a halogen oven fights its own housing; an insulated metal cavity holds heat efficiently and reaches a stable high temperature more reliably. A metal oven also toasts and bakes properly — a halogen bowl is awkward at both — and takes flat sheet pans and multiple racks. The Cuisinart TOA-70 and Ninja DT201 here are both full 1,800-watt convection ovens with real interiors and durable controls; against a halogen bowl they give up instant visibility and gain everything else. Cleaning is also easier: a bare-steel rack and a slide-out tray beat scrubbing a large curved glass bowl.

The decision rule

Choose a halogen oven if you want the cheapest, lightest way to crisp a single batch and value watching through glass, and you do not need to toast or bake. Choose an air fryer oven ifyou want a stable high temperature, more capacity, real toasting and baking, and easier cleaning — which is most people. For a primary countertop appliance, the insulated metal oven is the more capable and more durable buy.
