Are Air Fryers Healthy?

They use far less oil than deep-frying for a similar crisp, which is a genuine benefit. What they do not do is make unhealthy food healthy. Here is what actually changes, and what doesn't.

The genuine benefit

The real, measurable health advantage of an air fryer is oil. Deep-frying submerges food in oil, and the food absorbs a meaningful amount of it. Air frying crisps with hot air and needs at most a light spray, so a batch of chips or a piece of chicken comes out with a fraction of the added fat for a broadly similar texture. If you currently deep-fry and switch to air frying, that is a real reduction in added fat and calories.

What it does not do

It does not make the food itself healthy. Air-fried chips are still chips; air-fried processed food is still processed food. The appliance changes the cooking method, not the ingredient. A common misconception is that “air-fried” is a health label — it is not, any more than “baked” is. The benefit is specifically the oil you did not add, and only relative to frying; against baking or roasting, which also use little oil, the health difference is negligible.

The acrylamide footnote

Because air frying browns starchy foods at high heat, it forms acrylamide the same way roasting and toasting do — a general dietary consideration, not an air-fryer one. Cooking to golden rather than dark brown keeps it low, and the air fryer's visible basket actually makes that easier to judge than a deep-fryer does. We cover acrylamide in full here.

The honest summary

An air fryer is healthier than a deep-fryer for the same food, because of the oil. It is not a health device, and it does not improve the food you put in it. If you were deep-frying and now air fry, you have made a real improvement; if you were baking and now air fry, you have mostly just made things faster.

  • Ninja Ninja Foodi 10-in-1 XL Pro Air Fry Oven (DT201)

    1,800 W

Ninja Foodi 10-in-1 XL Pro Air Fry Oven (DT201)

The value pick, and it is not close. Same 1,800 W as ovens costing two and a half times more, two full cooking levels, and a published capacity claim — two 12-inch pizzas — that is specific enough to be checkable rather than a vibe.

  • Breville Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS)

    1,800 W

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS)

The most completely documented oven in the category, and the only one at any price whose manufacturer publishes a rated wattage, an interior volume and a full element layout in the same place. You pay roughly four times the category floor for that, and about a third of the premium is the documentation itself.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is air-fried food healthier than deep-fried?
Yes, for the same food — air frying uses a fraction of the oil, so the food absorbs far less added fat while getting a similar crisp texture. That is a real reduction in fat and calories compared with deep-frying.
Does air frying make food healthy?
No. It changes the cooking method, not the ingredient. Air-fried chips are still chips. The benefit is the reduced oil compared with deep-frying; against baking or roasting, which also use little oil, the difference is small.
