What eighty dollars honestly buys

Two elements, a thermostat that approximates your set point, four to six slices, and — on one of these — a published wattage. The BLACK+DECKER TO1785SG is the standout precisely because BLACK+DECKER publishes 1,150 watts, 120 volts, the capacity, the dimensions and a two-year warranty on its own site. For sixty-five dollars that is more complete documentation than several ovens on this site costing three hundred.

The lower draw is a real, if small, advantage. At 1,150 watts these ovens cost a few dollars a year less to run than an 1,800-watt machine, and — more usefully — they draw about 9.6 amps rather than the full 15, so they will not trip a breaker on a circuit shared with a kettle or a microwave. The trade is speed: less power means longer preheats and longer cooks. We put numbers on both sides of that.

None of these has a published temperature tolerance, so none is a baking oven. For toast, melting, reheating and a small tray they are exactly right, and every card here states the ceiling plainly rather than selling past it.
