Why Does My Air Fryer Oven Smoke?
Almost always grease — dripping from fatty food onto a hot element, or built up from cooks you never cleaned after. Here is how to tell the harmless kind from the kind that means stop, and how to prevent both.

The answer, first
Most air fryer oven smoke is grease burning off a hot element — either fat dripping from what you are cooking right now, or residue from previous cooks you did not clean away. It is common, usually harmless, and fixable by cleaning the oven and managing the fat. The smoke to worry about is different: an electrical or burning-plastic smell, or smoke with no food in the oven after the first use. This page sorts the ordinary from the warning, and how to stop each.
The common causes, in order
Fatty food dripping onto the element. Bacon, sausages, wings, anything that renders fat — the drips hit the hot lower element and smoke. This is the single most common cause and it is not a fault. Put a little water in the bottom tray to catch and cool the drips, use the drip tray the oven came with, or cook very fatty food at a slightly lower temperature.
Built-up grease from earlier cooks. An oven that smokes even with lean food is usually dirty. Grease bakes onto the element and interior over time and then smokes on every preheat. The fix is a proper clean — our cleaning guide walks through it — and then wiping down after fatty cooks so it does not rebuild.
First-use burn-off. A brand-new oven often smokes lightly the first time it heats, as manufacturing oils and protective coatings burn off the elements. This is expected; run it empty at a high temperature in a ventilated kitchen for the time the manual specifies before cooking, and it clears.
Foil or parchment in the wrong place.Foil touching an element, or parchment rated below the oven's temperature, can scorch and smoke — and foil against an element is also a fire risk. Only line the oven where and how the manual allows.
When smoke is a warning, not a nuisance
Stop using the oven and unplug it if the smoke smells of burning plastic or electrical insulation, if it comes from the controls or the cord rather than the cavity, or if it appears with the oven empty and clean after the first-use burn-off is done. Those point to an electrical fault, not grease, and they are a reason to contact the manufacturer — not to keep cooking. A cord that runs hot is in the same category. Our safety and recalls guide covers what to do next.
How to prevent it
Three habits handle almost all of it: catch the fat (a little water in the tray, or the drip tray, under fatty food), clean regularly (wipe after greasy cooks, deep-clean periodically), and do the first-use burn-off before you cook. A glass door helps too — an oven like the Hamilton Beach Easy View lets you spot fat pooling before it starts to smoke, and one with a published low-temperature range like the Instant Omni Plus lets you drop the temperature for very fatty food. None of this requires a new oven; it requires managing the grease.
What we are not diagnosing
We can tell you the ordinary causes and the general warning signs, but we cannot diagnose your specific oven from here. If cleaning and fat management do not stop the smoke, or if the smell is electrical, that is a manufacturer or repair question, not something to cook through. When in doubt, unplug it and ask the brand.

Hamilton Beach Easy View XL Toaster Oven with Sure-Crisp Air Fry, 6 Slice
Around seventy dollars for a six-slice oven with a real convection fan. At this price the honest framing is that you are buying a toaster oven that also blows air, and that is fine — that is what air frying is.

Instant Pot Omni Plus 19QT/18L Toaster Oven Air Fryer, 10-in-1
One of the few ovens here that publishes its interior in liters, which makes it the easiest in the category to compare on paper. The rotisserie is a genuine mechanical addition rather than a relabeled fan setting.
