Can You Put Foil in an Air Fryer Oven?
Yes, in every oven on this site — with two restrictions that every manufacturer states in almost identical words, and which almost nobody repeats. Parchment paper is a different question, and one brand answers it with a flat no.

The short answer
You can use aluminum foil in an air fryer toaster oven. Every manual we read for this page permits it, several actively recommend it to catch drippings, and two of them tell you to wrap food in it. What they all restrict is the same two things: foil must never touch a heating element, and foil must never be used to line the crumb tray or the cavity. Those two rules are not stylistic advice. The first is a fire and electric-shock warning; the second is an overheating warning, and it appears in near-identical wording across brands that otherwise agree on nothing.
Parchment paper is a different question with a different answer, and the answer depends on your oven. Skip to it below if that is what brought you here.
The rule every manual states
The sentence recurs so closely across manufacturers that it is clearly inherited from a shared safety standard. BLACK+DECKER's use and care manual for the TO3250XSB: do not cover crumb tray or any part of this oven with metal foil. This will cause overheating of the oven. Nuwave's Bravo XL Pro manual: do not cover the crumb tray or any part of the oven with metal foil. This will cause overheating of the oven. Our Place's Wonder Oven manual: do not cover the crumb tray or any part of the appliance with metal foil. Breville's books — the BOV680, BOV845, BOV860, BOV900 and BOV950 — carry the same clause in their safety pages.
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it tells you what you can do rather than only what you cannot. A countertop oven is a small sealed box with a great deal of heat in it, and it is designed around air moving through the cavity and out of the vents. Foil laid across the floor, the crumb tray or the walls blocks that path. Heat then accumulates in places the thermostat is not measuring, and the components that fail are the ones the designer assumed would be in moving air. This is also why the second rule exists: an element is a resistance wire running at several hundred degrees, and foil in contact with it can melt onto it. Our Place states the consequence plainly — the aluminum foil may melt and adhere to the heater tube, resulting in malfunction, electric shock, or fire.
Where foil is actively recommended
Two manuals go past permission. Nuwave's Bravo XL Pro manual instructs: use aluminum foil to wrap foods that produce oil or juice when operating the Drip/Baking Pan to catch drippings and prevent fire — and follows it immediately with to prevent fire, do not allow any foil to touch the heating elements. Permission and restriction in consecutive numbered clauses, which is about as clear as manufacturer documentation gets.
Our Place is stronger still. Its manual requires a barrier under greasy food: always use a heat-proof dish when cooking meat, fish, and fried foods. Be sure to place the food on a heat-proof dish or a sheet of aluminum foil to prevent food or oil from falling onto the heating elements and causing fire. So on that oven, foil is not merely allowed for fatty food — a sheet of it is one of the two acceptable ways to comply.
Breville's books use foil in their own instructions too: the slow-cook sections tell you to cover the cookware with a layer of aluminum foil before putting the lid on, to hold more moisture in. A manufacturer printing foil into its own method is the strongest permission available.
Parchment paper, baking paper and wax paper
Here the manuals diverge, and it is the most useful thing on this page. Our Place bans parchment outright. The Wonder Oven manual: do not use parchment paper, baking paper, or paper baking cups in the appliance. Do not use plastic or silicone containers. Doing so may cause fire. That is a flat prohibition, in the safety section, with the hazard named.
Breville, by contrast, prints parchment into its own recipes — lining a pan with foil or parchment paper, baking cookies on a parchment-lined sheet — and the BOV900 book's dehydrate tips recommend baking paper on top of the air fry/dehydrate basket when dehydrating foods with strong color, which is parchment used deliberately inside a basket.
The two positions are not actually in conflict; they are two manufacturers making different assumptions about how close the paper gets to the element and how fast the air is moving. Loose paper in a high-velocity air-fry cavity can lift. Paper weighted flat under food in a bake cycle does not. The practical translation, which is ours and not a manufacturer's: if your manual prohibits it, that settles it, and if it does not, keep parchment weighted down by food, trimmed inside the pan rather than draped over its edge, and out of the oven during a preheat when there is nothing holding it down. Wax paper is a separate material with a much lower rating and belongs in no oven at all.
The three mistakes that actually start fires
Lining the crumb tray. It is the single most common thing people do and it is explicitly prohibited by every manual here. The crumb tray sits directly under the lower element; foil across it reflects heat straight back at the element and traps the crumbs it was meant to catch.
A foil tent that can lift. Air-fry settings run the fan fast — the BOV860 book notes that the air-fry function is locked to super convection specifically because of the air speed. Loose foil in that airflow can move, and the place it can move to is the upper element. Tuck it under the food or under the pan rim.
Foil plus an over-full cavity.BLACK+DECKER's manual asks that food or a baking dish not come within 1½ inches of the top heating elements. Add a foil cover on top of a tall dish and that margin disappears without anyone noticing it has.
What to check before you use foil in yours
Find your oven's clearance to the top element. BLACK+DECKER publishes 1½ inches. Most brands publish nothing, in which case use the highest published figure you can find as a floor and leave more.
Find the crumb-tray clause. It will be in the first two pages of the safety section, and it is a hard no in every manual we have read.
Find the paper clause specifically, not the foil clause. They are different paragraphs and, as above, different answers. If the manual does not mention paper at all, that is an absence rather than a permission.
Prefer a pan to a liner. Almost everything people use foil for — catching drippings, keeping the tray clean, wrapping a potato — is done at least as well by the roasting pan the oven shipped with, with no fire clause attached. The cleaning guide covers the tray properly, and foil in the wrong place is one of the four causes of smoke.
If your oven is one of the ones below, you already have the answer: we read those manuals for this page, and the relevant clauses are quoted above.

1,400 W
Our Place Wonder Oven (6-in-1, 13 Qt)
The most completely documented small oven we have covered, from a brand better known for pans. Our Place publishes the rating-plate wattage, the temperature range, the interior dimensions and the warranty term — all four things we score documentation on. At 1,400 W it costs less per hour than the 1,800 W field; at four slices and a 9-inch pizza it is genuinely small; and the limits are published too — a 200°F floor and a 60-minute timer.

1,800 W
Nuwave Bravo XL Pro Air Fryer Toaster Oven (30 Qt, with probe)
A 30-quart, four-rack-level convection oven with an integrated temperature probe that stops the cook at a set internal temperature, and a maker that publishes its interior and exterior dimensions, weight, capacity, temperature range and warranty term — most of which the Ninja probe ovens do not. The 1,800-watt figure comes from a Nuwave support answer on its own product page rather than the manual's rating line, and we say so.

1,800 W
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS)
The most completely documented oven in the category, and the only one at any price whose manufacturer publishes a rated wattage, an interior volume and a full element layout in the same place. You pay roughly four times the category floor for that, and about a third of the premium is the documentation itself.

1,500 W
BLACK+DECKER 8-Slice Extra Wide Convection Toaster Oven (TO3250XSB)
A dial-controlled convection toaster oven whose maker publishes the wattage, the dimensions, the weight and a two-year warranty on its own page, and prints the rating line in the manual — 1500 W, 120 V, 60 Hz. Eight slices, a 12-inch pizza and a 9 x 13 pan with handles, for under a hundred dollars. It is a convection baker, not an air fryer: there is no basket and no air-fry setting.
