Air Fryer Toaster Ovens
The category that ate the standalone air fryer. One box, two jobs, and a marketing layer thick enough that most buyers cannot tell a genuine 1,800-watt convection oven from a 1,500-watt one with more preset buttons. We rank on what the manufacturer publishes and what it costs to run.
We earn a commission if you buy through our links. It does not change the price you pay, and it does not decide our picks — the scoring rubric is published in full, including what disqualifies an oven. How this works.

The Best Air Fryer Toaster Ovens
Our top pick: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS) — The most completely documented oven in the category, and the only one at any price whose manufacturer publishes a rated wattage, an interior volume and a full element layout in the same place. You pay roughly four times the category floor for that, and about a third of the premium is the documentation itself.
What an air fryer toaster oven actually is
It is a small convection oven. That is the whole thing. A fan moves hot air past a heating element and around the food, which strips away the insulating layer of cooler air that sits against a wet surface and lets the outside dry and brown before the inside overcooks. An air fryer does this in a smaller cavity with a faster fan. There is no frying, there is no oil, and there is no mechanism here that a convection oven has not had since the 1960s.
Understanding that saves you money immediately, because it tells you what you are choosing between. Every oven in this category has the same three parts — elements, a fan, and a box — and the differences that matter are how many elements there are, how independently they can be driven, and how much air is in the box. Everything else on the front panel is a set of numbers the elements are told to hit.
The 1,800-watt ceiling, and why it decides almost nothing
Nearly every full-size countertop oven in the United States is rated at or just under 1,800 watts. This is not a coincidence and it is not engineering ambition. A standard US kitchen branch circuit is 15 amps at 120 volts, and 15 × 120 = 1,800 — so 1,800 W is the ceiling a manufacturer can design to and still have the oven work in a normal kitchen. Everything from a $108 Cuisinart to a $400 Breville sits at that same number.
The consequence is the single most useful thing on this site: spending more does not lower your electricity bill, because the expensive oven and the cheap one draw the same power. At 18.34¢ per kWh an 1,800 W oven costs about 33.0¢ an hour to run at full draw, whether the badge says Breville or Black+Decker. What varies is how long you leave it on, and that is a function of the recipe, not the brand. The full arithmetic is published here.
Where wattage does matter is at the bottom of the market. A four-slice budget oven often runs 1,100–1,300 W rather than 1,800, which is genuinely cheaper per hour — about $38 a year against $60 at 30 minutes a day, 365 days a year — but takes longer to reach temperature and longer to cook. A cheaper hour is not automatically a cheaper meal, and nobody in this category will tell you that.
How to actually choose one
Measure your counter first, including the depth to the backsplash and the height to the underside of the cupboard. Then measure again with the door open, because a drop-down door needs 10–14 inches of clear space in front of it and that is the dimension people discover too late. French-door and flip-away designs exist specifically to solve this, and if your kitchen is tight they are worth more than any preset.
After that, the order of importance is: usable interior, whether the manufacturer publishes real specifications, controls, and finally function count. Function count is last on purpose. A thirteen-in-one oven does not do thirteen things; it has thirteen labeled combinations of element, fan speed and set point, and most households use four of them. If a preset would be replaced by turning a dial to 400°F, it is a label, not a feature.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Buying on capacity you will use twice a year. A 47-quart oven that fits a whole turkey is heating 47 quarts of air every time you reheat two slices of pizza, which is the exact inefficiency a countertop oven exists to avoid. If the honest answer is that you cook for two people most nights, a smaller cavity will preheat faster, cost less to run and take less counter — and the two occasions a year when you need more room are what the full-size oven in the wall is for.
The second mistake is treating “air fry” as a separate capability worth paying a premium for. If the oven has a convection fan and a rack that lets air under the food, it air fries. The word on the box is marketing; the perforated basket is the actual hardware, and it costs about fifteen dollars.
