Air Fryer Oven vs OTG

An OTG — oven, toaster, griller — is a radiant countertop oven. An air fryer oven is the same thing with a fan added. The whole difference is one component, and it decides more than the marketing suggests. Here is what the fan changes, and when an OTG is still the better buy.

#ad · Prices pulled live from the Amazon Product API, last checked Aug 8, 2026. Where we have no verified live price we show none — we would rather leave a gap than print a number that has gone stale. The wattage column is what the manufacturer publishes; “not published” means exactly that, and we have not estimated one. Scores are ours, compiled from published specifications, and are not test results.

The short answer

Buy an air fryer oven if you want crisping and even browning and will use the fan; buy an OTG if you want a simpler, often cheaper oven and mostly toast, bake and broil. An OTG (oven-toaster- griller) is a radiant oven that heats with still air. An air fryer oven is the same oven with a convection fan added — that one component is the entire difference, and everything the two do differently follows from it.

What the fan actually changes

It moves hot air across the food instead of letting it sit. That does two useful things: it browns more evenly, because no side is stuck facing a cold wall, and it crisps, because moving hot air pulls moisture off the surface faster — which is all “air frying” is. The Hamilton Beach Easy View XL here is a genuine convection oven at a budget price, and its fan is the reason it can call itself an air fryer at all. The mechanism is explained in full here. What the fan does not do is add power: a fan oven and a radiant oven at the same wattage cook at the same heat; the fan just distributes it.

What an OTG still does better

Simplicity, price and delicate baking. The Cuisinart Custom Classic is a full 1,800-watt radiant oven behind three knobs, with essentially nothing to fail electronically and a decade-long track record — a durability and value case a fan oven struggles to match. Its review is here. Still air also suits cakes and custards, which a strong fan can dry out or lopside; many air fryer ovens let you turn the fan off for exactly this reason. If you rarely crisp anything and value a simple, long-lived oven, the fan is a feature you would pay for and switch off.

The decision rule

Buy an air fryer oven if you want crisp fries, even roasting and the air-fry function, and will actually use the fan. Buy an OTG if you want a simpler, cheaper, longer-lived oven, mostly toast, bake and broil, and bake delicate things where still air is kinder. It is one component either way — the same oven with the fan on or off — so match it to whether crisping is actually part of how you cook.

If you want both in one box, an air fryer oven with a fan-off mode gives you the OTG when you need it — our air fryer oven ranking is here. If a plain radiant oven is enough, the toaster oven ranking covers the OTG side, and the broader air fryer vs toaster oven comparison goes deeper on the same one-component split.

01
Hamilton Beach Hamilton Beach Easy View XL Toaster Oven with Sure-Crisp Air Fry, 6 Slice

The cheapest air fry that is not a gimmick

Hamilton Beach Easy View XL Toaster Oven with Sure-Crisp Air Fry, 6 Slice

No published wattage
6.3/10

Around seventy dollars for a six-slice oven with a real convection fan. At this price the honest framing is that you are buying a toaster oven that also blows air, and that is fine — that is what air frying is.

What it gets right

  • Six-slice capacity at a price where four is normal
  • The glass door is the actual feature — being able to see without opening is worth more than three extra presets
  • Cheap enough that its eventual failure is an inconvenience rather than a loss

What it doesn't

  • Hamilton Beach does not publish a wattage for this SKU in any document we could find
  • No published interior volume or temperature tolerance
  • Budget-tier ovens in this band typically run well under 1,800 W, which means longer times for the same result — but without a published figure we cannot tell you by how much

What it costs to run

Hamilton Beach publishes no wattage for this oven in any document we could find, so we do not show a running-cost figure for it. We are not going to estimate one from a similar model. Here is the method we would have used.

you are replacing a full-size oven for baking. This is a toaster oven with a fan, and at this price that is exactly what it should be.

Cuisinart Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler (TOB-40N)

1,800 W behind three knobs. It has been sold essentially unchanged for over a decade, which in small appliances is the strongest reliability signal available short of taking one apart.

What it gets right

  • Full 1,800 W at well under half what an 1,800 W Breville costs
  • Knobs, a bell and a timer — there is essentially nothing here to fail electronically
  • A production run long enough that its failure modes are well known

What it doesn't

  • No convection fan
  • No published interior volume
  • The dated look is not accidental; this design has not changed in years

What it costs to run

About 33.9¢ an hour at full draw, or $61.86 a year at 30 minutes a day, 365 days a year and 18.83¢ per kWh.

1,800 W ÷ 1000 × 182.5 h × 18.83¢ = $61.86

1800 Watt as stated in Cuisinart's own listing title and copy. Cuisinart publishes no separate spec sheet for this model, so this is brand-supplied rather than manual-verified. This is an upper bound: the elements cycle off once the cavity is at temperature, and no manufacturer publishes a duty cycle, so we compute at full rated draw rather than invent a correction factor. The full method is published.

How we picked

Ovens we claim to have cooked in: 0

Everyone in this category tells you they roasted forty chickens. We have roasted none, and we say so. Here is what we do instead: read the manufacturer's manual and spec sheet, record the published wattage, interior volume, temperature range and warranty term, work out what the oven costs to run for an hour and for a year, show the arithmetic so you can redo it with your own electricity rate, and cite all of it. Where a brand publishes no wattage, we print no running cost rather than borrowing a number from a similar model. Prices come live from Amazon's API and disappear rather than go stale.

The scores above are judgments from that documented research — not test results. One of the five metrics is Documentation: whether the manufacturer will tell you what its oven draws at all. The full rubric, including what disqualifies an oven, is published in full.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the difference between an air fryer oven and an OTG?
One component: a fan. An OTG (oven-toaster-griller) is a radiant oven that heats with still air; an air fryer oven is the same oven with a convection fan added, which browns more evenly and crisps the surface. At the same wattage they cook at the same heat -- the fan only distributes it.
Is an air fryer oven better than an OTG?
For crisping and even roasting, yes -- the fan is what makes those work. For simplicity, price and delicate baking like cakes, a radiant OTG is often the better and longer-lived buy. Many air fryer ovens let you turn the fan off, giving you both. More on the fan settings here.
Can an OTG air fry?
Not really -- air frying depends on a fan moving hot air across the food, and a true OTG has no fan. It can roast and bake, but it will not crisp the way a convection air fryer oven does. If crisping matters, you want the fan.
