Do Air Fryer Ovens Need a Dedicated Circuit?

Most air fryer ovens do not require a dedicated circuit, but a high-wattage one comes close. An 1,800-watt oven at 120 volts draws about 15 amps — essentially the entire rating of a standard 15-amp US kitchen circuit — so it runs fine alone but trips the breaker the moment a kettle, microwave or toaster shares the same line. A lower-wattage oven leaves headroom. If your kitchen circuit is already busy, that draw is worth checking before you buy, not after the lights dim.

The arithmetic

Amps are watts divided by volts. An 1,800-watt oven at 120 volts is 1800 ÷ 120 = 15 amps. A 15-amp breaker is rated for exactly that, but the National Electrical Code treats anything drawing for three hours or more as a “continuous load” and limits it to 80% of the breaker — 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit — precisely because running at the full rating for a long time is what overheats wiring. A long bake or a dehydrate cycle at 15 amps sits right at, or past, that guidance on its own. Add anything else on the same circuit and you are over it, which is what trips the breaker.

Why a lower wattage is sometimes the smarter buy

Check the breaker for the kitchen outlets in your panel — it is labelled 15 or 20. Newer US kitchens are often wired with 20-amp small-appliance circuits, which comfortably run an 1,800-watt oven with room to spare; older homes frequently have 15-amp circuits shared across several outlets, where the oven monopolises the line. If you are unsure, the safe assumption is 15 amps and the safe habit is to give a high-wattage oven its own outlet during use, not to share it with another heating appliance.
